Hayley Westenra – HUSHABYE

HW_HushabyeNew Zealand songstress Hayley Westenra pays tribute to His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge – Prince William and Kate’s firstborn with an enchanting new album – Hushabye – a set of essential lullabies.

Perhaps continuing in the style of music written for their royal wedding in 2011, Welsh composer Paul Mealor also composed the music for Sleep On with lyrics by Brendan Graham.

Somewhere along the way, Hayley strays slightly from the lullaby theme to include songs like Englebert Humperdinck’s When At Night, Billy Joel’s Goodnight My Angel and even the classic Dream A Little Dream. She also sings Stay Awake and Hushabye Mountain, songs from popular musical films Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

Generally, this album is a stripped down, all vocals-only compilation with little or no accompaniment. Very soothing, intimate and cozy. I can almost imagine her standing right next to the cradle and singing to the baby.

But, this album of sleep-inducing songs doesn’t adequately display Hayley’s powerful singing prowess. Plus, because the tracks flow seamlessly into each other both tempo-wise and pitch-wise, sometimes it’s hard to tell that you’re listening to a new track. And after a while, listening fatigue may set in so I’m giving Hushabye 2 out of 5
